What is telemetry data? A practical guide for modern systems

Telemetry data is the stream of measurements that instrumented devices, applications, and services continuously emit to a central system so engineers can monitor behavior, diagnose problems, and make informed decisions in real time and over the long term.

In this article, we’ll look at what telemetry data means in practice for modern software, networks, and cloud platforms: how it’s produced, what kinds of signals it carries (logs, metrics, traces, and more), and why it has become essential for observability, performance, and security at scale.

What is telemetry data?

Telemetry data is best understood as the automated collection and transmission of measurements from remote or distributed systems to a central receiver. Instead of someone manually logging values or polling devices on demand, the system itself continuously sends time-stamped signals about its state.

The idea predates modern computing: aircraft send telemetry about altitude and engine status to ground control, connected cars report location and fault codes, and industrial sensors stream temperature, pressure, and vibration from factory floors. The same pattern now underpins telemetry in software and networks. Web applications emit data about requests, errors, and user behavior; operating systems and infrastructure publish CPU, memory, disk, and network utilization; and routers, switches, and firewalls generate network telemetry that exposes traffic patterns and potential failures.

For engineering teams, telemetry data enables monitoring, observability, and Application Performance Monitoring (APM). It feeds dashboards, alerts, traces, and analytics that help you detect problems early, understand their impact, and tune performance. Unlike arbitrary raw data, telemetry data is intentionally instrumented, time-stamped, and structured for operational insight.

How telemetry data works

Telemetry data flows through a pipeline where each stage adds structure and reliability so that raw signals from distributed systems can become useful insight.

Collection: getting telemetry off the source systems

Telemetry starts at the source: applications, containers, operating systems, network devices, or IoT sensors. These components are instrumented to emit logs, metrics, or traces, often using standards like OpenTelemetry. In many environments, a telemetry logging agent runs on servers and containers to collect this data, accepts telemetry over protocols such as OTLP, tails local log files or ingests metrics, and normalizes records into a consistent internal format.

Transmission and streaming: moving data reliably

Once collected, telemetry data must be transmitted to central backends without loss. Agents batch and compress records, apply flow control, and use secure protocols to forward data to SIEMs, observability platforms, time-series databases, or message queues. This layer has to cope with bursty logs during incidents, steady high-volume metrics, and intermittent network connectivity, while preserving ordering and context.

Storage: structuring telemetry for later use

Downstream systems store telemetry data in ways optimized for querying and correlation: log indices, time-series stores, or specialized telemetry data platforms. Before or during storage, a processing layer can filter noise, normalize field names, and enrich records with consistent metadata such as service name, environment, or host identifiers.

Analysis and consumption: turning telemetry into insight

Engineers interact with telemetry through dashboards, alert rules, traces, and ad-hoc queries. A single telemetry logging agent can often send both logs and metrics, keeping the pipeline simpler: you can route different signal types to different backends while keeping collection and processing centralized. This end-to-end pipeline is what makes telemetry data actionable for monitoring, observability, and incident response.

Types of telemetry data: logs, metrics, traces

When people talk about types of telemetry data in modern systems, they usually mean three core signal types: logs, metrics, and traces. Each describes system behavior from a different angle, and together they form the backbone of observability and APM.

In practice, modern observability pipelines combine all three: logs for detailed context, metrics for fast aggregated signals, and traces for end-to-end request behavior.

Logs

Logs are timestamped records of discrete events. They capture what happened, where, and often why. Typical examples include a web server access log entry for an HTTP 500 error, an authentication service recording a failed login attempt with user and IP details, or an application writing a stack trace on an unhandled exception.

Logs are flexible and rich in context, making them invaluable for debugging and security investigations. As telemetry in software, logs often include fields like service name, environment, request ID, or user ID to support correlation with other signal types.

Metrics

Metrics are numeric measurements sampled over time. They answer "how much" or "how often" something is happening. Typical examples include request latency percentiles for a REST API, error rates for a backend service, and CPU, memory, disk, and network utilization on a host or container.

Metrics are compact, easy to aggregate, and ideal for dashboards and alerting. They show trends and thresholds, helping teams detect performance regressions or capacity issues early. In most observability stacks, metrics are the first signal checked when assessing system health. Traces

Traces describe how a single request or transaction flows through a distributed system. A trace is composed of spans, each representing one operation, such as an HTTP call, a database query, or a message queue publish.

Typical examples include a user’s checkout request traced across a frontend, API gateway, payment service, and database, or a background job processed by several microservices with each span showing timing and status.

Traces answer "where is the time going?" and "which service is causing this error?" They are especially valuable in microservice architectures, where a single request can touch many components.

Telemetry in software, APM, and observability

In modern systems, telemetry starts inside the application itself. Code, frameworks, and SDKs are instrumented to emit data about what the software is doing: request timings, exceptions, cache hits, queue lengths, and feature usage. APM tools collect a focused subset of these signals — response times, error rates, SQL query timings, garbage collection pauses, and calls to external services — to help teams validate releases, detect performance regressions, and track SLOs such as latency and availability.

Observability telemetry is the combination of logs, metrics, and traces that feeds observability platforms. Telemetry provides the raw signals; observability is about what you can infer from those signals when something goes wrong. In other words, telemetry data is the foundation. Observability is the ability to ask new questions of your system without having to redeploy code just to add more logging.

What is network telemetry?

Network telemetry refers to the collection and analysis of data from network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, and load balancers, to understand traffic patterns, performance, and security posture. Common data points include interface counters (bytes and packets in/out), flow records (who is talking to whom, on which ports), packet drops, error counts, and BGP state changes.

Traditionally, this data was gathered using SNMP polling, where a management system periodically queried each device. SNMP works but has limits: polling intervals are coarse, queries add overhead, and high-frequency data is hard to capture. Many modern networks address this with streaming telemetry, where devices continuously push high-frequency data to collectors using protocols such as gNMI and OpenConfig. This reduces polling overhead, enables near real-time visibility, and scales better in large environments.

Telemetry data in cloud platforms

When people ask about telemetry data in Azure, AWS, or GCP, they’re really asking how cloud platforms collect and expose logs, metrics, and traces from hosted applications and infrastructure. All major clouds follow a similar pattern: platform services ingest telemetry from resources, store it in managed backends, and expose it through dashboards, alerts, and query tools.

In Microsoft Azure, Azure Monitor and Application Insights capture platform metrics, activity logs, availability checks, dependency calls, and custom events, storing them in Log Analytics workspaces. In AWS, CloudWatch collects logs and metrics from services and EC2 instances, while X-Ray focuses on distributed traces and service maps. In Google Cloud, Cloud Logging, Cloud Monitoring, and Cloud Trace provide the same pattern for GCP resources.

Developers typically instrument applications with SDKs or OpenTelemetry libraries, while the cloud fabric contributes infrastructure-level telemetry for managed services and serverless functions. Many teams also run telemetry agents inside VMs or containers to ship data to external SIEMs or observability platforms, an approach that lets you merge cloud-native telemetry with on-premises sources rather than keeping each environment siloed.

Telemetry data examples

The following examples use OpenTelemetry-style formats to show how the three signal types appear in practice across common domains.

Privacy, security, and governance of telemetry data

Questions like "Is telemetry spying?" are common, particularly around OS and browser telemetry. Because telemetry logging runs in the background, people are right to ask what data is being sent and to whom.

Telemetry data can be anonymous and aggregated (overall error rates, resource usage) or tied to specific users or devices; the difference is in how it’s designed. Operational telemetry focuses on reliability, security, and performance; invasive tracking profiles individuals beyond what is necessary. The same mechanisms can serve both purposes, so intent and governance matter.

Good practice is to treat telemetry logging as sensitive data processing: minimize what you collect, avoid unnecessary personal data, anonymize or pseudonymize where possible, and document what’s collected and why. Systems should offer opt-out options, and telemetry should be encrypted in transit and at rest with appropriate access controls. Where telemetry includes personal or device-identifiable information, regulations like GDPR or CCPA may apply, requiring purpose limitation, retention policies, and user rights.

Building a telemetry logging pipeline

A practical telemetry pipeline starts on each host. A log or telemetry agent runs alongside your workloads and collects system logs (syslog, Windows Event Log), application logs, and security events, along with basic host metrics. From there, it forwards data to one or more backends: a SIEM, a metrics store, or a broader platform that can ingest logs, metrics, and traces together.

Regardless of the specific tool, a well-designed pipeline follows a few principles. Enrich records with metadata such as environment, region, service name, and team ownership so you can slice and correlate telemetry across dimensions. Design for resilience: agents should buffer locally during network issues, and intermediate collectors should be highly available to avoid data loss during outages.

Aim for a hub-and-spoke model where a single agent on each host routes data to multiple destinations (SIEM, APM, observability platform), rather than running separate collection stacks. This reduces overhead and keeps the pipeline manageable as tooling and requirements evolve.

When you invest in collecting and structuring it well, you get faster troubleshooting during incidents, better insight into performance over time, and stronger security and compliance visibility.

Good telemetry in a landscape that continues to evolve starts with good instrumentation and collection.
